MTN Group has recently gone through a Board shake-up. The calm after that storm has brought about renewed hope for the mobile network giant in the form South Africa’s former deputy Finance Minister, Mcebisi Jonas.

Therefore, over the next 12 months, the group will see Jonas head up the board’s operations after he has allowed Nhleko enough time to oversee the establishment of the new International Advisory Board (IAB).

Furthermore, the former governor of Nigeria’s central bank, Lamido Sanusi, and Vincent Rague from Kenya’s International Finance Corporation will join Jonas at the helm from 1 July.

“The primary purpose of the IAB will be to counsel, guide and support the MTN Group from time to time in fulfilling its vision and objective of being one of the premier African corporations with a global footprint in telecommunications, contributing to increased digital inclusion in Africa and the Middle East, a pivotal aspect of the fourth industrial revolution,” the group stated.

This position offers Jonas the opportunity to exercise his expertise in the finance sector outside of public service for the first time.

So far, the former member of the ANC has made notable contributions to the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture, pitting former president Jacob Zuma at the centre of a wide-reaching corruption plot with the notorious Gupta family.
